Here is the real difference: unlike in people, a dog’s cholesterol is not primarily a heart disease risk. Dogs rarely develop the artery-clogging plaques that make this number matter so much for us. Why Does Blood Cholesterol Rise in Dogs?

The most common everyday cause is a recent meal, since a non-fasted sample can temporarily raise cholesterol. Certain breeds, particularly Miniature Schnauzers, also run higher at baseline due to a tendency called idiopathic hyperlipidemia. The name is Greek: idios, “one’s own,” and pathos, “suffering,” give “no clear cause,” while hyper, “over,” lipos, “fat,” and haima, “blood,” describe the excess blood fat.
Roughly a third of Miniature Schnauzers carry this trait, and it also raises triglycerides. That is thought to add to the breed’s estimated 5% lifetime risk of pancreatitis, the highest of any breed studied (a breed welfare review of Miniature Schnauzer pancreatitis and hyperlipidaemia). Pancreatitis is Greek too: pankreas, “sweetbread,” plus the suffix -itis, “inflammation.”
The two hormonal conditions most associated with high cholesterol in dogs are hypothyroidism and Cushing’s disease, both of which slow or alter fat metabolism. Diabetes, cholestatic liver disease, and protein-losing kidney disease can also raise it.

What Does a Mildly High Cholesterol Usually Mean?
A mild elevation after a recent meal, or in a Miniature Schnauzer with no other symptoms, is often simply explained by that context rather than disease. Many dogs run consistently a little higher without any underlying problem.
In these cases, the most useful next step is usually a fasted recheck to see whether the elevation persists once diet is accounted for.
A single mildly high cholesterol, especially in a non-fasted sample or a predisposed breed, is often not a sign of disease.
If the fasted recheck stays elevated, that is the point where looking at thyroid and adrenal function becomes worthwhile.

When Is High Cholesterol Something to Worry About?
Cholesterol deserves closer attention when it stays high on a fasted recheck or comes with other symptoms. The signs to watch for at home include:
- Weight gain, hair loss, or a dull coat, suggesting low thyroid
- Increased thirst, urination, and appetite, suggesting Cushing’s disease
- Abdominal enlargement or panting, also seen with Cushing’s disease
- Vomiting or abdominal pain
Repeated vomiting and abdominal pain alongside very high cholesterol or triglycerides needs prompt veterinary evaluation, especially in a Miniature Schnauzer or a dog with a history of pancreatitis. High blood fats are a recognized trigger for pancreatitis, not just a marker of it.

How Do Veterinarians Interpret High Cholesterol?
We interpret cholesterol alongside fasting status, breed, thyroid values, and signs suggestive of Cushing’s disease. A confirmed, persistent fasted elevation is what prompts a real search for a cause, rather than the first number seen.
Because it overlaps closely with thyroid function, a persistently high cholesterol is one of the reasons we often check T4 on the same visit. Similarly, if Cushing’s disease is suspected based on symptoms, specific adrenal testing is used rather than cholesterol alone.
