Dog Urinalysis Explained: What Every Part of the Report Means

A dog urinalysis looks at three things at once: how concentrated the urine is, its chemical makeup, and what shows up under the microscope, information bloodwork alone can’t provide. It routinely catches problems, especially early kidney disease, well before those changes show up in blood values. That’s why we run it alongside the blood chemistry panel rather than in place of it.

Here’s what each part of the report measures, and what an abnormal finding often means. The results are read together with your dog’s blood chemistry panel, especially the kidney values.

Dog Urinalysis Explained: Why Vets Run This Test

We commonly run a urinalysis alongside bloodwork when investigating kidney values, increased thirst or urination, straining to urinate, blood in the urine, or as part of a general wellness check in older dogs. The two tests really do complete each other.

Nephron loss has to reach roughly two-thirds before urine concentration drops, and about 75% before creatinine or BUN rises. That gap is why a change in urine concentration can be the earliest clue to declining kidney function, sometimes appearing before bloodwork does.

How the sample was collected, whether free-catch, by a clean technique, or directly from the bladder, also affects how vets interpret certain findings, particularly bacteria.

What Does Urine Concentration Tell Us?

Urine specific gravity (USG) measures how concentrated the urine is, which reflects how well the kidneys are conserving water. In a normally hydrated dog, USG typically runs from 1.015 to 1.045. A concentrated reading above 1.030 means the kidneys still have real reserve. A fixed value in the 1.008 to 1.012 range, called isosthenuria, means the kidneys have lost the ability to concentrate or dilute urine at all.

Dilute urine, roughly USG below 1.015, especially alongside increased thirst or elevated kidney blood values, is one of the earliest and most useful signs that kidney function may be declining.

A single dilute sample is not automatically concerning, since stress, recent fluids, or a large water intake can dilute urine temporarily. A consistently dilute pattern over repeated samples carries more weight.

What Does Protein in the Urine Mean?

Healthy kidneys normally keep most protein in the bloodstream rather than letting it leak into urine. Proteinuria (from protein + the Greek ouron, “urine”) means protein appearing in the urine. Especially in a concentrated sample, it can be an early sign that the kidney’s filtering units are not working as they should.

Persistent protein in a well-concentrated sample, confirmed with a urine protein-to-creatinine ratio above 0.5, is the finding we take seriously as a marker of kidney health. A ratio under 0.2 is normal, and 0.2 to 0.5 is a borderline result worth rechecking.

If protein is confirmed and persistent, it is often followed over time alongside kidney blood values, since it can appear before creatinine or BUN change meaningfully.

What Do Glucose, Ketones, and pH Show?

Glucose should not normally appear in urine, since healthy kidneys reabsorb it fully. Glycosuria (from the Greek glykys, “sweet,” + ouron, “urine”) means glucose in the urine. It is a hallmark finding that supports a diabetes diagnosis, typically once blood glucose climbs above roughly 180 mg/dL, the point where the kidneys can no longer reabsorb all the glucose they filter. Ketones often appear alongside glucose in more advanced, unmanaged diabetes.

Urine pH is influenced by diet and can also shift with certain infections and crystal types. The normal range for dogs runs roughly 6 to 7.5, and pH is rarely meaningful on its own but adds useful context when crystals or an infection are present.

What Do Blood, White Cells, Crystals, and Bacteria Indicate?

Hematuria (from the Greek haima, “blood,” + ouron, “urine”) means blood in the urine, more than about 5 red blood cells per high-power field. It can come from a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, inflammation, or trauma, and sometimes simply from a difficult sample collection. White blood cells above that same 5-per-field mark usually point toward inflammation or infection somewhere in the urinary tract.

Crystals form when minerals in urine become concentrated enough to precipitate, and certain types are linked to specific stone risks or, less commonly, toxin exposure. Bacteria on a properly collected sample generally support a urinary tract infection, especially alongside white blood cells and clinical signs.

A dog straining to urinate, producing little to no urine, and appearing distressed needs urgent veterinary care. A complete blockage can cause dangerous uremia within 36 to 48 hours, and can be fatal within about three days if untreated. This risk is especially high in male dogs, where the urethra is narrower.

How Do Veterinarians Read a Urinalysis Together With Bloodwork?

Urinalysis and blood chemistry are most useful side by side. Urine concentration paired with BUN, creatinine, and SDMA helps us determine whether reduced kidney values reflect true kidney disease or something else, such as dehydration.

What Happens After an Abnormal Urinalysis?

For a single mildly abnormal finding with no other symptoms, a recheck on a fresh, well-collected sample is often the sensible first step. For a confirmed abnormality, especially reduced concentration or persistent protein, further testing alongside bloodwork is the usual path.

Urinalysis findings are interpreted differently depending on how the sample was collected and what the bloodwork shows. This is a value to work through with your own veterinarian rather than from a printout alone.

If your dog is straining to urinate or producing very little urine, do not wait for a routine appointment.
